Turn on the television today, and you'll find a growing number of psychics, end-time prophets, and common everyday people who believe our world is about to end -- or, if not end, at least be ravaged by global disasters. Flip on the radio, and you'll hear late-night talk show hosts interviewing "experts" who say global earthquake and volcanic activity is ominously on the rise. Drop by your local New Age bookstore, and you'll find best-selling books that have pieced together startling evidence, from both ancient and modern cultures all over the world, that say our planet is about to be revisited by another Noah-like cataclysm. Poster-size maps, depicting a radically-altered Earth, sell like hotcakes, while some of today's most popular talk show guests describe how their near-death experience, encounter with aliens, meeting with ascended masters, or personal revelation made it clear to them that humanity's days are numbered.

What are we to make of all this? How valid are all these predictions of global upheaval?

While today's millennium-fever can't be traced to any particular person (save, perhaps, Jesus Christ and the end-time predictions that are recorded in the New Testament), much of today's preoccupation with geological earth changes, can be traced to famed Virginia Beach psychic Edgar Cayce. [See the side bar, "Edgar Cayce (1877-1945)"] Surprisingly, only a handful of Cayce's 14,000 psychic readings actually dealt with earth changes (the Cayce "Circulating File" on earth changes lists a total of 69 readings that contain earth change predictions, and many of these are obscure one liners). But included in this small collection of readings are a few legendary quotes that unleashed dramatic changes of their own. Like the earthquakes they predicted, these predictions began small, with only a handful of people aware of them, and then grew, eventually culminating in books, conferences, legions of copycat psychics, and droves of people that lived their lives expecting the world to come apart at the seams at any moment. While other end-time prophets made similar predictions decades before Cayce, Cayce was the first to consolidate them into a unique series of events that later showed up in many of today's most well-known sources. One of the most famous of these predictions was channeled by Cayce in 1934:

"As to the changes physical again: The Earth will be broken up in the western portion of America. The greater portion of Japan must go into the sea. The upper portion of Europe will be changed as in the twinkling of an eye. Land will appear off the east coast of America. There will be the upheavals in the Arctic and in the Antarctic that will make for the eruption of volcanoes in the torrid areas, and there will be the shifting then of the poles -- so that where there has been those of a frigid or the semi-tropical will become the more tropical, and moss and fern will grow. And these will begin in those periods in '58 to '98, when these will be proclaimed as the periods when His light will be seen again in the clouds. As to times, as to seasons, as to places, ALONE is it given to those who have named the Name -- and who bear the mark of those of His calling and His election in their bodies. To them it shall be given.

"As to those things that deal with the mental of the Earth, these shall call upon the mountains to cover many. As ye have seen those in lowly places raised to those of power in the political, in the machinery of nation's activities, so shall ye see those in high places reduced and calling on the waters of darkness to cover them. And those that in the inmost recesses of their selves awaken to the spiritual truths that are to be given, and those places that have acted in the capacity of teachers among men, the rottenness of those that have ministered in places will be brought to light, and turmoils and strifes shall enter. And, as there is the wavering of those that would enter as emissaries, as teachers, from the Throne of Life, the Throne of Light, the Throne of Immortality, and wage war in the air with those of darkness, then know ye that Armageddon is at hand...."

(Edgar Cayce Reading #3976-15, 1/19/34)

I encountered this unsettling prediction 25 years ago, when I came across my first Edgar Cayce book, "The Sleeping Prophet," by Jess Stearn. A year and a half later, I moved to Virginia Beach and became apart of Edgar Cayce's ASSOCIATION FOR RESEARCH & ENLIGHTENMENT (A.R.E.). I worked in an A.R.E. work-study program, became a full-time staff member at A.R.E. Headquarters, became a counselor at the A.R.E. CAMP and eventually presented conferences at the A.R.E. CAMP and workshops at the Headquarters. Along with a burning interest in the Cayce basics of prayer, meditation, dreams and Jesus, I became deeply interested in Cayce's earth-change predictions. I was so convinced that Cayce's dire predictions for the future were going to happen, that I spent years gathering together with others who shared similar beliefs. We started study groups and spiritual communities, organized earth-change gatherings, researched Cayce-like prophecies from other spiritual traditions, stockpiled food, prayed and meditated, and did everything we could to prepare for global upheaval.

As the years passed, I took note of the fact that none of Cayce's main earth-change predictions were happening, but attributed this to timing: The big one hadn't struck California yet, but any day now it would and the global dominoes would start to fall: California, New York, Japan, the stock market, Armageddon, the Earth's poles, 300 and 400 mile an hour winds raging across the surface of the planet, mile-high tidal waves... and, when the dust settled, the Second Coming of Christ and establishment of the Kingdom of God on planet Earth.

I also began to notice that many of the people that were drawn to Cayce-like predictions, were troubled souls like myself -- people who felt disempowered, disenfranchised, and alienated from the main culture. Searching for meaning, and healing, many of us were inspired by the thought that a system we had difficulty functioning in was about to come crashing down, and a new one, more aligned with our particular interests, was about to take its place. Even more gratifying was the idea that we could emerge from the rubble as the chief architects of a new world.

In the late '70s and early '80s the earth-change pumps went into overdrive. In 1979, Jeffrey Goodman published "We Are the Earthquake Generation." Goodman's book featured the predictions of seven well-known psychics, including Cayce, and included both a map of what the continental United States would look like after the changes, as well as a step-by-step chronology. Among other things, Goodman's psychics predicted the following disasters would take place from 1980 thru 1985:

-- Repeated large-scale earthquakes in California, western Canada, and Alaska
-- The Imperial Valley in southern California starts to fill with water
-- Regularly occurring large-scale earthquakes, land subsidence, and coastal inundations for California, Oregon, Washington, western Canada, and Alaska
-- Palm Springs is under water
-- San Diego, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are destroyed
-- California coastline pushed back to Bakersfield, Fresno and Sacramento
-- Seaway opened up through central Oregon (from west to east) reaching Idaho border
-- A major earthquake destroys a large part of New York City
-- Land rises off the southeast coast of the United States, near Bimini in the Bahamas

The '70s and '80s also produced "The Jupiter Effect", by John Gribben and Stephen Plagemann, a book that championed the idea that an unusual planetary alignment would trigger Cayce's global upheavals, "California SuperQuake 1975-77?" by Paul James, and, most important of all, "Pole Shift", by John White. When the California superquake that James predicted failed to take place, he pushed his Cayce-inspired dates ahead to 1982. White, on the other hand, who produced the most exhaustively-researched book to date on pole-shift-related predictions, called it quits. Writing in his 1990 book, "The Meeting of Science and Spirit", White declared, "On the basis of a decade's hindsight, I... do not think a pole shift will occur as predicted." In an interview that appeared in the 1996 issue of ATLANTIS RISING (Number 9), White was even more direct, calling the possibility of a geological pole shift around the year 2000 "nonsense and fantasy." While White's now-classic "Pole Shift" is still in print (it is presently being printed by the A.R.E. PRESS), it now includes an epilogue in which White itemizes the reasons why he believes a pole shift will not happen anytime soon -- if ever. One of his main arguments is that the precursor events Cayce predicted -- chief among them a gradual increase in global volcanic and earthquake activity -- haven't happened.

With Goodman, White, James, Gribben, Plagemann and others bowing out of the picture due to failed predictions, a new batch of authors and end-time earth-change prophets took their place. The most well-known and influential of these new prophetic voices were Gordon-Michael Scallion and Lori Adaile Toye. As self-proclaimed prophets, rather than authors or researchers, both Scallion and Toye claimed to receive their earth-change predictions through visions and dreams, independent of one another and, of course, independent of Edgar Cayce -- even though the same Cayce-like scenario is duplicated in both of their scenarios with suspicious similarity. Appearing on the prophetic scene at about the same time in the early '80s and still thriving today, they both produce large, full-color earth-change maps of the United States and the world, and have repeatedly "updated" their maps, and earth-change time tables, as their predictions have failed to take place. While Toye has moved away from viewing her earth-change predictions as literal events, Scallion has modified his primary cataclysmic dates (from 1998-2001 to 1998-2012), swept his most dramatic failed predictions under the rug, moved away from making both specific predictions and geological predictions (which have been embarrassingly wrong for years) and regularly misrepresented many of his predictions to make them sound like they are coming true when, for the most part, they aren't.

Meanwhile, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and pole shifts aren't the only Cayce-like predictions that haven't been coming true. Another cornerstone of the Cayce earth-change scenario involves the legendary continent of Atlantis. This aspect of Cayce's scenario claims that an ancient, technologically-advanced civilization was destroyed some 12,000 years ago by the same kind of geological forces that are supposed to be leveling continents today. Presently lying beneath the Atlantic ocean, Cayce claimed that the island/continent of Atlantis would rise again as the modern day upheavals intensified. Cayce also said that remnants of this ancient civilization could be found in Egypt (and elsewhere). Indeed, according to Cayce, Atlanteans not only helped built the great pyramids of Egypt, but also stored records of their ancient civilization in a secret Hall of Records that is presently buried near the Sphinx.

Most of the psychics who have made earth-change predictions similar to Cayce's, have also incorporated the Atlantean mythology into their scenarios. Some, like Gordon-Michael Scallion, have fleshed out Cayce's original, often sketchy pictures of Atlantis, with extraordinary detail. Claiming, among other things, that the Great Pyramid was a giant gas-filled time machine, Scallion boldly declared that his technicolor visions of Atlantis would be proven true when archeologists discovered 12 buildings "containing art, musical instruments, records of their history, prophecies, medical instruments, their tenets, machinery and the ancient, perfectly preserved remains of three people" on the Giza Plateau in Egypt. Said Scallion, "I believe it [the Giza discovery] will be the greatest of all discoveries, a record of who we really are, where we came from, what happened to our ancestors, and most importantly, prophecies left for us over 12,000 years ago, to be discovered exactly at this time -- 1995." No such discovery was ever made, nor were these dramatic predictions ever mentioned again by Scallion. [See the side bar, "Gordon-Michael Scallion"]

Virginia Beach psychic, Paul Solomon, also painted elaborate pictures of what Cayce's Hall of Records would contain -- and what effect its discovery would have on the rest of the world. In addition, Solomon declared that a man named "John Piniel," would be the one to discover and open the legendary Hall of Records. Piniel, who first appears in the Edgar Cayce readings in 1934, is another prophetic image that originated with Cayce and eventually found its way into the prophecies and world views of other psychics. The anticipated arrival of Piniel, who was said to be an incarnation of John the Beloved coming to prepare the way for Christ's return to Earth, was such an important part of Virginia Beach lore that a steady stream of claimants to the title regularly showed up at A.R.E. Headquarters claiming that they were the long-awaited "forerunner." In the early '80s, Solomon, who died a few years ago from an extended illness, sent shock waves through the Virginia Beach community by claiming to have personally met Piniel in Jerusalem, and then again in Belgium. A great story while it lasted, Solomon's Piniel never did make a public appearance, let alone discover and open the Hall of Records, and many of Virginia Beach's faithful concluded that Solomon had fabricated the entire story.

Meanwhile, the A.R.E. has been funding various kinds of excursions to Egypt for years, hoping to find evidence of Atlantis and locate the legendary Hall of Records themselves. One early Cayce believer was archeologist Mark Lehner. Regarded today as the world's foremost expert on the Sphinx, Lehner began searching Egypt for evidence of Atlantis 25 years ago. Early in his career, he published a book for the A.R.E. called "The Egyptian Legacy," which explained and championed Cayce's psychic viewpoint concerning ancient Egypt. The A.R.E. funded some of Lenher's early research in Egypt and published a series of interviews with Lehner describing his work and discoveries in their membership magazine, VENTURE INWARD. As the years rolled by and Lehner was unable to find ANYTHING in Egypt to substantiate Cayce's Atlantean world view, Lehner eventually emerged as one of the world's main spokespersons AGAINST the growing number of psychics and researchers who claimed that Egypt's massive monuments were made by Atlanteans, extraterrestrials, or some other technologically-advanced culture. A few years ago, Lehner was featured on a NATIONAL PUBLIC TELEVISION episode of NOVA, "This Old Pyramid," demonstrating how techniques inscribed in ancient Egyptian monuments could have been used to construct Egypt's giant structures. He also appeared in NBC's 1993 Emmy-winning television special, "The Mystery of the Sphinx." In that television special, Lehner publicly challenged self-taught Egyptologist John Anthony West and Dr. Robert Schoch, a respected geologist from Boston University who reawakened the Atlantis controversy by claiming the erosion on the Sphinx was due to rain water, not sand -- which meant the Sphinx was not only several thousand years older than modern Egyptologists believed, but also built by a people they had no records of.

While the controversial water erosion theory was generating renewed, often very heated, debate, NOVA produced another PBS special, "Secrets of Lost Empires," that further challenged the idea that highly-advanced cultures from the Earth and/or elsewhere were responsible for the architectural wonders of the ancient world. Hiring teams of experts (which again included Lehner), NOVA visited Stonehenge, the Inca ruins of Machu Pichu, the obelisks of Egypt, and the Coliseum of Rome. Their goal was to see if these ancient monuments could be constructed using the tools and resources of the time period in which they were built. While this new NOVA special did not clear up all the mysteries associated with these ancient sites (no explanation, for instance, was offered as to how the ancients were able to come up with their precise mathematical and astronomical calculations), it did successfully prove that these monuments could be built by ancient, non-technological cultures. Meanwhile, archeologists have also been unraveling the mysteries of Easter Island. Long believed by many psychics, pseudo scientists, and UFO buffs to be the handiwork of a technologically-advanced culture from Earth or elsewhere, archeologists now know the giant heads on Easter Island were actually carved by Polynesians who first arrived on the island around 400 to 700 A.D. Current research indicates that the statues could have been made by as few as 20 people using only stone chisels within a year.

To add insult to injury, some of the key pieces of evidence long cited by researchers who believe modern civilization was preceded by another one that was swept away in global cataclysms 12,000 years ago, have also been systematically dismantled. [See the side bar, "Why There Won't Be a Pole Shift"]

And then there are the hard facts of current seismological data. Based on statistics from the US GEOLOGICAL SURVEY and SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE [See the side bar, "Earthquake Statistics"], current seismic and geological evidence does not support the belief that our planet is on the verge of planetary-wide catastrophic geological change, nor does it support the idea that large, continent-sized chunks of land have ever risen or fallen into the seas. Indeed, the most serious geological threat our planet faces today, does not come from earthquake or volcanic activity (which has been very stable for over a century). Rather, it comes from the heavens, in the form of marauding comets and asteroids.

Does all of this mean that our planet is safe from the kind of geological upheavals Cayce, and others have predicted?

When it comes to "global" geological upheavals, the answer is almost certainly, "Yes." The chance that our planet is about to experience a cataclysmic pole shift, or see continents rise and fall overnight, is exceedingly remote.

On the other hand, there is a very real possibility that you and I may live to see isolated earth changes in some of the geologically-active places on our planet that psychics have long pinpointed. If, for instance, a major earthquake, or series of earthquakes, struck Japan, California, and/or New York, there could be global ramifications, such as a stock market crash -- which, in fact, many earthquake experts are presently warning against. And for the record, while seismologists have long warned of California and Japan's vulnerability, they have only recently determined that New York City is also at risk. Furthermore, there is geological evidence that super megaquakes have struck the west coast of America in recent history. On January 27, 1700, Japan's Pacific coast suddenly rose seven feet and stayed that way for many hours. The unexpected tsunami washed through houses and flooded rice paddies up and down the coast. Experts from the GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF JAPAN believe that the Japanese tsunami was produced by a magnitude 9 earthquake that occurred ten hours earlier and 5,000 miles away in the Pacific Northwest. Geologists from the UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON agree. They found evidence that a massive earthquake, centered on a fault just offshore called the Cascadia Subduction Zone, produced a tidal wave that was at least 30 feet high on the west coast of America. Using computer models, scientists were able to determine that an 8.0 earthquake would only have raised the seas in Japan by one foot, or less, while a 9 magnitude quake would have raised the seas seven feet. Portions of Antarctica are also beginning to melt, which is something Cayce potentially alluded to in his early earth-changes readings.

But is that all Cayce's dramatic, planetary-wide earth-change predictions amount to -- sensing valid geological instability in certain portions of the world and then exaggerating it to include the entire planet?

More likely, Cayce and other psychics who have been sensing catastrophic earth-changes (the honest ones anyway), are probably tapping into the extraordinary changes presently expressing themselves in other areas: environmental degradation, ozone holes, global warming, deforestation, the growing extinction of plants and animals, social instability, moral decay, and, last but not least, a bona fide spiritual awakening on a global scale. If this is true, then psychics like Cayce can be credited for accurately tuning into "the spirit" of the coming changes, even though they, and their followers, have taken their intuitive insights too literally. As Gillian Holloway, a Ph.D. who specializes in dreams and dream work, points out:

"As a dream analyst I hear dozens if not hundreds of dreams each week. During a recent series of interviews across the United States I was fascinated that listeners from vastly different locales and backgrounds phoned in about dreams of 'the end of the world.' Most callers worried these dreams might foreshadow actual events, requesting help in trying to determine what such imagery might represent. Could the burning cities, tidal waves, earthquakes and floods in their dreams be our inevitable fate?

"Possibly. However dreams are powerfully influenced by the time and culture and in which the dreamer lives. The ideologies, fears, and superstitions that surround us bombard our psyches and are woven into the settings of our dreams. Since most images of death in dreams symbolically represent change, visions of planetary doom may also represent planetary change, rather than the end of all life."

While the Cayce readings have probably done more to popularize end-time cataclysmic changes than any other New Age source on the planet, the ultimate value of Cayce's work won't rest on whether or not he was right about earth changes, or for that matter, tales of sunken continents, technologically-advanced Atlanteans, or John Piniel. Indeed, these concerns were never the primary focus of Edgar Cayce, or his readings. Those who knew Cayce best, consistently describe Cayce as more of a man of God, than a psychic; the primary focus of his life was serving God and helping others, rather than shaking people up with dire predictions or fantastic stories of humanity's past and future. Furthermore, as pointed out earlier, the number of readings that dealt with earth changes are insignificant when compared to the number of readings given in the service of healing. Indeed, while Cayce's end-time predictions have spawned generations of Cayce-like psychics and are increasingly trumpeted in today's doomsday-focused television specials, Cayce's greatest contribution to humanity has probably been his Search for God study groups, his holistic health philosophy and remedies, and the effect his readings have had on people like myself who trace their spiritual awakenings back to him.

When the new millennium finally arrives, the A.R.E. and its membership at large may have some serious soul searching to do with respect to what the Cayce readings had to say about earth changes and human history. Even so, the Cayce legacy, which is full of universal, timeless truths, will endure. In my view, other psychics and would-be prophets who've spent less time on the basics, and more time generating doomsday predictions and far-fetched world views, won't fair as well.

As for myself, my turbulent journey through the material I have presented here is not finished. Even today, I'm not sure how fully I understand all the forces at work in these prophecies, or in the people who make them and follow them -- including myself. Significantly, Edgar Cayce wrestled with these same concerns.

In June of 1936, Cayce asked his source for help understanding a dream he had in March of that same year. In his dream, Cayce found himself born again in 2100 A.D. in Nebraska, which was now a coastal state. The Pacific Ocean covered all of the western part of the United States. In his dream, Cayce was a child, remembering that he had been Edgar Cayce in a previous life. Scientists, "men with long beards, little hair, and thick glasses," were called in to observe him. They decided to visit the places where Cayce said that he had been born, lived, and worked in his previous incarnation. Taking the child with them, the scientists visited Cayce's old stomping grounds "in a long, cigar-shaped, metal flying ship which moved at high speed." Cayce saw that water covered part of Alabama, that New York had been destroyed and was being rebuilt, and that Norfolk, Virginia, had become an immense seaport. The dream concluded with the scientists finding records of Cayce's work and returning to Nebraska to study them.

Cayce's source answered his query by saying that his dream had come to strengthen him in a time of doubt; to help him "keep the faith," to know that he had helped many people, and to remember that Jesus was close to him through his every trial. And while Cayce's source insisted that the physical changes he had seen in his dream were going to happen ("These changes in the Earth will come to pass, for the time and times and half times are at an end, and there begins those periods for the readjustments"), Cayce's source also reminded him, "That the periods from the material angle as visioned are to come to pass matters not to the soul, but do thy duty today! Tomorrow will take care of itself."

Edgar Cayce died a half a century ago, in 1945. While he was alive, giving earth-change readings and agonizing over how valid they were, he had very few ways to check the accuracy of these dramatic readings. His choices were limited to believing them, in blind faith, or dismissing them, when he had seen his readings consistently work miracles in his life, and the lives of thousands of others who sought his help.

Today, we no longer have to rely so strongly on blind faith -- at least on this issue. Anyone who is interested can use the emerging global communications system to locate accurate seismological data, communicate directly with professional seismologists, volcanists and geologists, gather evidence from other fields of scientific investigation, and correspond with others of like-mind who may also be gathering information and experiences related to our particular interests.

Having access to a global network of resources is, of course, no guarantee we will find accurate information, or compile the information we find in a valid way. Like all searches, our success will depend primarily on our motivation. Do we really want to find the truth? Or are we more interested in finding evidence to support a particular belief, philosophy, agenda? When it comes to matters of guidance, and divine revelation, I also believe it is important to have a fundamental understanding of how human psychology and inner impulses, intuitions and various forms of guidance interact. We need to know, for instance, that it is simply not possible for human beings to receive guidance from on High that has not be affected by our personalities, cultural conditioning, needs, desires, and other imperfections. In order to interpret and apply inner impulses correctly, it is my view that we also need to vigorously compare notes with others, checking and double checking our revelations, insights, research and discoveries against theirs.

Finally, I think we need to understand the explosive nature of the times in which we live. For while you and I will probably not live to see the Earth's land masses shift, causing massive tidal waves to rampage across the planet, other kinds of pole shifts and tidal waves are, at this very moment, remaking our world. How can we survive the onslaught? How can we correctly understand the turbulent, ever-changing, often contradictory inner and outer impulses arising in our world? How can we gracefully surrender old ideas and ways of doing things, and embrace new ones? When Edgar Cayce's world was turned upside down, he turned to Jesus and often found solace in one of the Bible's most famous "earth-change" passages:

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early. The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the Earth. He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the Earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the Earth. The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah."

--Psalm 46

EDGAR CAYCE (1877-1945)

For most of his adult life, Edgar Cayce was able to provide intuitive insights into nearly any question imaginable. When individuals came to him with a question, he would place himself into a sleep-induced trance. While in that state he could respond to virtually any question asked. His responses have come to be called "readings". Today his psychic readings constitute one of the largest and most impressive records of intuitive information to emanate from a single individual.

Cayce was born on a farm near Hopkinsville, Kentucky. At an early age he gave evidence of his budding talent: he was able to master his school lessons by sleeping on his books. At the age of 21 he developed a throat paralysis which threatened the loss of his voice. When doctors were unable to find a cause for his condition, Cayce entered the same hypnotic sleep that had enabled him to learn his school lessons years before. In that state, he was able to recommend a cure which successfully repaired his throat muscles and restored his voice. It was soon discovered that he could do the same for others.

For many years the information that came through Cayce dealt mainly with medical problems. Eventually the scope of his readings expanded to include such topics as meditation, dreams, reincarnation, and prophecy. The transcripts of this readings have provided the basis for over 300 popular books about Cayce's work. Significantly, while Cayce himself was a devout Christian, and while Jesus occupies a central place in the philosophy of his readings, the source of Cayce's readings insisted on a loving and inclusive attitude towards all people, of all faiths.

Cayce would eventually give over 14,000 readings on more than 10,000 different topics to people all over the world. These readings continue to be researched and written about over half a century after his death and are available to students, writers, researchers, medical professionals, and A.R.E. members the world over. Headquarted in Virginia Beach, Virginia, the A.R.E. presently operates its own university, conference center, extensive library, summer camp, holistic health center, and press. It regularly hosts conferences, supports Search for God study groups, publishes member books and magazines, and sells a variety of Cayce and New Age products through its bookstore and member catalog.

"As to conditions in the geography of the world, of the country -- changes here are gradually coming about. No wonder, then, that the entity feels the need, the necessity for change of central location. For, many portions of the East Coast will be disturbed, as well as many portions of the west coast, as well as the central portion of the U.S. In the next few years land will appear in the Atlantic as well as in the Pacific. And what is the coast line now of many a land will be the bed of the ocean. Even many battle fields of the present will be ocean, will be the seas, the bays, the lands over which THE NEW ORDER will carry on their trade as one with another. Portions of the now east coast of New York, or New York City itself, will in the main disappear. This will be another generation, though, here; while the southern portions of Carolina, Georgia -- these will disappear. This will be much sooner. The waters of the lakes will empty into the Gulf, rather than the waterway over which such discussions have been recently made. It would be well if the waterway were prepared, but not for that purpose for which it is at present being considered. Then the area where the entity is now located (Virginia Beach) will be among the safety lands, as will be portions of what is now Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, and much of the southern portion of Canada and the eastern portion of Canada; while the western land-much of that is to be disturbed -- in this land -- as, of course, much in other lands."

---Edgar Cayce Reading #1152-11, 8/13/41

"If there are the greater activities in the Vesuvius, or Pelee, then the southern coast of California -- and the areas between Salt Lake and the southern portions of Nevada -- may expect, within three months following same, an inundation by the earthquakes."

---Edgar Cayce Reading #270-35, 1/21/36

"Q. Will the Earth upheavals during 1936 affect San Francisco as it did in 1906?

"A. This'll be a baby beside what it'll be in '36!"

---Edgar Cayce Reading #270-32, 6/12/34

"Q. What great change or the beginning of what change, if any, is to take place in the earth in the year 2,000 to 2,001 A.D.?

"A. When there is the shifting of the poles, or a new cycle begins."

---Edgar Cayce Reading #826-8

"Q. He said He would come again. What about His second coming, when shall that be?

"A. The time no one knows. Even as He gave, not even the Son Himself, only the Father. Not until His enemies -- and the Earth -- are wholly in subjegation to His will, His powers.

"Q. Are we entering the period of preparation for His coming?

"A. Entering the test period, rather.

"Q. When Jesus Christ comes the second time will He set up His Kingdom on earth, and will it be an everlasting Kingdom?

"A. Read His promises in that ye have written of His words, as John gave, 'He shall rule for a thousand years. Then shall Satan be loosed again for a season.'"

---Edgar Cayce Reading #5749-2, 6/28/32

"Then, as to that second coming into the world -- He will come again and receive His own, those who have prepared themselves through belief in Him and acting in that manner; for the Spirit is abroad, and the time draws near, and there will be the reckoning... He that hath eyes to see, let him see. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear that music of the coming of the Lord of this vineyard. And art THOU ready to give account of what thou hast done with thine opportunity in the earth as the Sons of God, as the heirs and joint heirs of glory with the Son? Then make thy paths straight, for there must come an answering for what thou hast done with thy Lord! He will not tarry; for having overcome, He will appear even as the Lord and Master. Not as one born, but as one that returneth to His own; for He will walk and talk with men of every clime, and those who are faithful and just in their reckoning shall be caught up with Him to rule and to do judgement for a thousand years."

---Edgar Cayce Reading #5749-7

"For He shall come as ye have seen Him go, in the body He occupied in Galilee. The body He formed, that was crucified on the cross, that appeared to Phillip, that appeared to I, even John."

---Edgar Cayce Reading #5749-4, 8/6/33

Gordon-Michael Scallion is the most well-known and widely-publicized of today's American psychics. His specific predictions, as well as the overall content of his visions, follow closely in the footsteps of the famed Virginia Beach psychic, Edgar Cayce.

According to Scallion, his psychic gifts were triggered by an experience he had in 1979. After admitting himself to a hospital for a sudden, unexplained illness, Scallion claims a woman appeared to him in a vision and made a series of short-term and long-term predictions. Among other things, the woman said that beginning in the late 1980s there would be major earth changes. These changes would begin, she said, with earthquakes, volcanic activities and tsunamis. By the 1990s, they would spread to the whole planet and would increase in intensity with each passing year. She called these changes a "Tribulation."

Now, almost two decades after his initial experience, Scallion claims that his visions come to him both spontaneously and as a deliberate, conscious process of inner seeking. Scallion presently publishes two large wall maps that depict expected changes to North America and the world. His North American map, which originally illustrated changes only in the continental United States, was first published in 1982. Since then, he has revised this map several times. His world map was printed for the first time in 1996.

Scallion also publishes a monthly newsletter, produces his own radio show, maintains a Web site, sells books, tapes and videos, and is frequent visitor on television and radio programs dealing with earth changes.

"The year 1993 shall be known as 'The Year of the Great Quakes'. The Earth's magnetic field shall become erratic as it prepares for its new course. In the United States, the first of these changes will see the beginning of the breaking-up of California starting with Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco -- the Golden Gate Bridge damaged, the Imperial Valley inundated -- a nation in shock... The land's time has come, it prepares for its cleansing and reunion with its mother land -- Mu. Many see the event as a relief and begin to rebuild. Sadly, more is to come. Mass migrations begin into Nevada, Arizona, Colorado. Western U.S. hit with quakes -- many exceed 7.0. Inundations occur in coastal U.S. from Maine to Florida Keys -- Vancouver to the Baja -- Florida's Panhandle to Texas..."

[Not only did 1993 NOT become known as "The Year of the Great Quakes," it even fell below the yearly average. 1993 had 16 earthquakes 7.0 and greater -- 2 below the yearly average.]

"I sense the earth changes will occur as a result of the collision of the Comet Shoemaker-Levy with Jupiter. Watch the Pacific and Atlantic oceans for violent reactions within 24 hours of the collision."

"I see a portion of the Imperial Valley under water this year. I see no turning back now. I believe all my predictions will occur regarding the West Coast. My visions are now in full color with no alternative aspects, or realities, to shift to. In other words, events will now unfold with no possibility of change. I suggest everyone living on the West Coast pay attention to their dreams and intuitive sense. Time is now very short. Earth changes in the year 1995 will create new maps of the West Coast."

"I believe Phobos will be pulled from its orbit and ricochet off the Earth's atmosphere. Since publishing this, I have had an additional insight on the cause. Comet Hale-Bopp will affect magnetic conditions on the Sun as it passes through the heavens. These changes will be subtle at first, but will increase daily, until a magnetic shift, or polarity change occurs on the sun. As the solar shift occurs, it will induce a magnetic pole shift on Mars, causing Phobos to leave it orbit."

The clock is beginning to tick rather loud for those who believe the world is going to geologically self-destruct by the year 2000. Now that we are nearing the end of 1997, the geological changes envisioned by Edgar Cayce, Gordon-Michael Scallion and a host of others, were supposed to be well underway; major earthquakes (8.0 and larger) and massive volcanic eruptions were supposed to be pushing planet Earth towards a climatic pole shift which, in turn, would finish the job by sending mountains of water roaring across the Earth's continents.

What happened?

To be fair, the year 2000 isn't upon us yet and some of the disasters predicted by Cayce and others may still visit us. That said, the possibility that our planet is going to undergo a global geological catastrophe is becoming increasingly remote. Unless we get smacked by a comet (as some psychics have predicted), bounced into by the Martian moon, "Phobos" (as Scallion has predicted), or assaulted by some other presently unforeseen force that is powerful enough to unleash global calamities, the chance of our world being ripped apart at the seams by geological disturbances is almost nil. Here's the earthquake and volcano evidence that should send most (if not all) cataclysmic-minded psychics back to the drawing board.

Q. Will California eventually fall into the ocean?

A. No. The motion of plates will not make California sink -- California is moving horizontally along the San Andreas fault and up around the Transverse Ranges.

Q. Are earthquakes on the increase?

A. We continue to hear from people throughout the world that earthquakes are on the increase, and it may seem that we are having more earthquakes. However, earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater have remained fairly constant throughout this century, and according to records have actually seemed to decrease in recent years. In the last 20 years we have been able to locate more earthquakes yearly because of the increase in the number of seismograph stations in the world and improved global communications. In 1931 there were 350 stations operating in the world, today more than 4,000 stations and the data comes in rapidly from these stations by telex, computer and satellite. This increase has helped us and other seismological centers to locate many small earthquakes which were undetected in earlier years.

Q. How many earthquakes does THE NATIONAL EARTHQUAKE INFORMATION CENTER (NEIC) report yearly?

A. The NEIC now locates about 12,000 to 14,000 earthquakes yearly, or approximately 35 a day.

The most 7.0 and larger earthquakes tracked since 1900 occurred in 1943. There were 41 that year. Significantly, the years from 1934 to 1951 all exceeded the average annual rate of 18 earthquakes per year.

What is true of earthquakes is also true of volcanoes. According to a spokesperson for the SMITHSONIAN VOLCANISM NETWORK, "Our analysis DOES NOT support [the idea that volcanism is increasing] in any way, although with the encouragement of the SMITHSONIAN (and many other factors), reporting of small eruptions has increased in this century."

Here are a few reasons why current researchers believe a pole shift won't happen:

First, the gradual rise in global earthquake and volcano activity that Edgar Cayce and other psychics predicted would initiate a pole shift, has not occurred.

Second, two Renaissance maps, depicting what appears to be an ice-free Antarctica, are frequently cited by pole-shift theorists as evidence that Antarctica was free of ice 12,000 years ago, which is when they believe the last catastrophic pole shift took place. Many of these researchers also believe these two maps, the Piri Reis Map (a Renaissance map found by Charles Hapgood in the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS in 1959) and a map drawn by Oronteus Finaeus in 1532, are arial maps of Antarctica that were produced by a technologically-advanced civilization that could fly. Modern subglacial topographic maps indicate the ancient maps are not accurate renditions of what actually lies beneath Antarctica's ice. In addition, these maps do not account for what the subglacial topography of Antarctica would actually look like if massive amounts of ice and snow were removed and the land rebounded from the weight (isostatic rebound): Antarctica would be raised as much as 3,100 feet in the interior and 160 feet along the coasts. Thus, while both of these maps may have been efforts to guess at what the land mass of Antarctica looked like, neither was drawn by someone who actually saw an ice-free Antarctica, either from the ground or air. Some researchers believe that the maps are based on observations of early Portuguese sailers who may have discovered Antarctica before 1513. The Piri Reis Map even contains comments that strongly suggest it drew at least part of its inspiration from early, possibly secret, Portuguese records.

Third, the discovery of wooly mammoths that appear to have been instantly frozen, some with flowers in their mouths and stomachs, has been one of the strongest arguments pole-shift theorists have used to support an instantaneous flipping of the poles -- or slipping of the Earth's crust. Researchers who have seriously studied this peculiar phenomenon, now believe that every argument put forward by pole-shift theorists to explain this phenomenon, have been effectively refuted by ordinary explanations. To name a few:

1. The new science of taphonomy (the study of the processes an animal goes through from the time it starts to die until its remains are finally embedded in a geological stratum) demonstrates that mammoths died not as the result of disastrous temperature change, but from asphyxia (i.e., drowning in an icy stream, suffocating in a landslide, etc.);

2. Mammoth flesh is not so well preserved as has been claimed, but rather the flesh had begun to putrefy BEFORE being frozen in permafrost;

3. Mammoths were adapted to cold conditions (pole-shift theorists typically believe they weren't -- they argue mammoths lived in warmer climates that were instantly blanketed by arctic conditions);

4. There is documented evidence that flowers and other vegetation do not require dramatic flash-freezes to be perfectly preserved (more mundane circumstances have produced this phenomenon);

5. Radiocarbon dating of frozen mammoths indicates that they were not all frozen in a single catastrophic moment -- rather, their freezings were spread out over a much longer time period.

Fourth, while the mechanics of ice ages are still not fully understood, current evidence argues against pole shifts being their triggering mechanism. In "The Meeting of Science and Spirit," John White, who is also the author of "Pole Shift," itemizes the arguments for pole-shift-induced ice ages as well as current research calling these arguments into question. His conclusion: "The latest evidence weighs against pole shifts, although the onset of deglaciation is [still] unexplained."
